About São Jorge

Welcome to São Jorge, a hidden gem in the Azores archipelago. Known for its dramatic cliffs, lush landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, this island offers a unique blend of natural beauty and traditional Portuguese charm.

Location

São Jorge is one of the central islands in the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal. Its elongated shape stretches over 53 kilometers, making it a striking feature in the Atlantic Ocean.

History

Discovered in the 15th century by Portuguese explorers, São Jorge was settled for its fertile land and strategic position. The island has a rich history of agriculture, particularly in wheat and later, cheese production. In the 19th century, whaling became an important industry, though it has since ceased. Today, tourism is growing, with visitors drawn to the island's natural beauty and hiking trails.

Culture

The island is famous for its São Jorge cheese, a semi-hard cheese with a unique flavor. Local festivals, such as the Feast of São Jorge, celebrate the island's patron saint with music, food, and traditional dances. Beyond cheese, São Jorge is known for its handicrafts, including woven textiles and pottery. The island's isolation has preserved many traditional customs, making it a living museum of Azorean culture.

Geography

Formed by volcanic activity, São Jorge boasts rugged terrain, including the central mountain range and the unique fajãs—coastal plains created by lava flows or landslides. The island's highest point is Pico da Esperança, standing at 1,053 meters. The fajãs, some accessible only by foot, are home to small communities and unique ecosystems.
